This subseries contains records documenting the activities of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Pembroke, Ontario during their mission in Peru. The records are historical summaries and records of major events. This includes summaries, reports, annals, accounts and recollections, correspondence, news and publication clippings, newsletters, photographs, pamphlets, and event programs. Much of the material is produced by the Sisters about their efforts and time in Peru, but some of it is material written about their efforts, such as the booklet Sisters of St. Joseph Pembroke Totally Involved in Peru by Kay Cronin and a booklet on the Parish of Christ the King which was administered by Sister Nora Kelly. Some material specifically concerns projects such as the creation of a nursing home in Chincha Alta, Colegio San Jose, the Short-Term Missionary Service in South America program, and the Bethany Community in Pueblo Nuevo which was Sister Nora Kelly’s Christian Community Project. There are also pamphlets from Sisters’ professions in 2000 and a thank-you card and photograph from Dr. Christine L. M. Gervais regarding her graduation and thesis.
There is also material related to other religious and charitable organizations the Sisters collaborated with in Peru, such as a pamphlet for The Medical Friends of Peru, a charity to provide medical services to the missions served by the Oblate Fathers in Peru, and declarations from the Peruvian Episcopal Assembly and religious authorities. There is also material concerning the deaths of Sister Edith Mary Selik of the Sisters of St. Francis and Sister Gabriel Joseph Gussin of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet during the 1970 earthquake in Lima and of Columban Sister Joan Sawyer on December 14, 1983.
In addition, material concerning the general history of Peru and major historical events in Peru is also present. This included politics, natural disasters, the economy, and crime. Particularly, there is material documenting the Sender Luminosos (self-named Communist Party of Peru and guerrilla group), strikes, and earthquakes. Photographs, summaries, news clippings, and accounts from the 2007 earthquake and the Sisters disaster relief efforts are present. There is also The role of the affected state: A case study on the Peruvian earthquake response by Samir Elhawary and Gerardo Castillo from 2008.
