Mount Forest, Ont. Annals series

This series contains the records from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton, Ontario's Mount Forest mission. Mount Forest is part of the Township of Wellington North which is located on the treaty lands and traditional territory of the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee.

On August 24, 1908, three Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton arrived in Mount Forest. Sister M. Gertrude Cashen was the Superior with Sister M. Clement Kehoe and Sister M. Eucheria Foley as teachers at St. Mary’s School. The Sisters withdrew in 1932 but returned on August 18, 1944, upon the request of Father Thomas Doyle. Sister St. Philip Long came as the Superior with Sister St. Hyacinth Ohlheiser and Sister Eulalia Marie Robinson as teachers. While in Mount Forest the Sisters taught at St. Mary’s School, taught music, and did parish ministry. In 1978 the Sisters withdrew from Mount Forest for the final time due to steady decline in religious vocations.

Records present include annals, historical summaries, news clippings, lists of Sisters, cards, programmes, financial reports, and a poem by Tony Schouten.

This series contains the records of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton, Ontario's Toronto Community. Beginning in the fall of 1989 the Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton, Ontario living and working in Toronto formed a semi-official community where they could gather to share prayer and discuss their ministries. Sister Anne Anderson become the local leader of this group in 1991. The others involved in this community were Sisters Carol King, Pat Valeriote, Barbara Kenrick, and Margaret Doherty. This series contains the annals and a convocation programme from the University of St. Michael's College.

This series contains physical slides of photographs and presentations created, collected, and presented by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton, Ontario. These slides primarily depict the Sisters' social activities, internal events, and their ministries in healthcare and education in Ontario, Canada, Jamaica, and Guatemala. There are also slides depicting the history of the congregation, the installation of a superior general of the congregation, a flag raising event at the Motherhouse in Dundas, Bishop Paul Reading, Prime Minister Elliot Trudeau, Pope John Paul II, and Sisters’ travels to the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and Europe, most often in Lyon or Le Puy-en-Velay, France. Some of the slides have accompanying textual descriptions.

Sister Theresa Marie Caillouette series

This series contains records collected about, belonging to, and created by Sister Theresa Marie Caillouette. It includes photographs, a poem she recited when she became a postulant, her resume, biography, and educational certificates and awards for her work. Notable inclusions are a certificate of distinction on completion of the Management Education program offered by the Ontario Hospital Association in 2000 and an award in recognition of outstanding volunteer service to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chatham in 1995. She was an avid participant of the Canadian Medaille Team and received funding from the French Embassy to study the history of the Congregation in France. In 1986 she was honored as a researcher by the Federation at the 150th Anniversary event at St. Louis, Missouri. A chronology of her research activities, a certificate from the 150th Anniversary, and addresses she made to the Federation for the period from 1967-1971 are included. There are newsletters and news clippings documenting her views and her work, including a 1974 newspaper profile for her parish work at St. Joseph’s Convent in Sarnia and a profile in a newsletter announcing her election as General Superior by the Diocese of London on April 13, 1987. Her views on the role of Sisters in parish ministry are set out in a paper she authored in 1987. The paper is based on her seven years of experience as assistant to the local priest and her membership on the Diocesan Commission on the role of women in the Church and in society. Her reflection on conversion, published in Canadian C.S.J. Bulletin in 1991 while she was serving as Vice-President of the Federation, is also included.

The fonds consists of records concerning the St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Chatham. It contains material related to the hospital, the school, the student nurses, and the Alumnae Association. The fonds contains correspondence, pamphlets, booklets, newsletters, promotional material, scrapbooks, photo albums, yearbooks, a diploma, a nursing kit, a crest, two large, matted photographs of graduation classes, and news clippings related to the school, the hospital, the students, and the alumnae. It also includes a variety of photographs of student nurses, student life, the school, the hospital, hospital staff, and alumnae events, and memorabilia from alumni and graduation events.

The Alumnae Association was dedicated to connecting the students and preserving the history of the school. The Alumnae Association’s newsletters, event preparations, treasurer’s book, annual report, constitutions, and bylaws are present.

Notable material directly concerning St. Joseph’s Hospital includes a 1957 constitution and moral code of the medical staff and a list of administrators. There is also a list of the directors of the School of Nursing.

This sous-contains fundraising documents pertaining to rural collections and the Orphans’ Festival which show that the Sisters needed support from the surrounding community in order to operate the orphanage. Articles, tickets, programmes, and receipts from the annual Orphans’ Festival show the importance the event held, not only to the Sisters but also to Hamilton citizens. Financial records further illustrate how much money was needed to care for the orphaned children. The account books detail the necessary items Sisters purchased to successfully run the orphanage. The fee books show how much parents paid to foster their children. These records also demonstrate the needs the Sisters had on outside resources, like government grants and surrounding community funding. Documents pertaining to regulatory compliance are also found, including the 1965 Children’s Institutions Act and Regulations which outlines the rules the orphanage had to follow in order to operate within the law. Correspondence on a variety of topics is also present in the collection, including finance, education, and daily operations. There are photographs which offer a “snapshot” into the life of the orphanage. These images depict Sisters working in the orphanage, the Orphans’ Festival, children’s communion celebrations, and the dining hall. The sous-fonds also contains records created by the Advisory Committee of Mount St. Joseph Orphanage. These records outline the types of work the committee did, including structural changes to the building. There are several summaries of the history of St. Mary’s Orphanage, and a brief summary of the history of Mount St. Carmel Infants’ Home. The registers offer significant information about the children who remained in the care of the orphanage. These list information such as the orphan’s name, date of birth, religious denomination, nationality, date of admission and discharge, date of death [if applicable], and who took the child after he or she was discharged. There are also registers that list information about children who stayed for day stays, as well as children who were moved into foster homes. The sous-fonds contains information about orphans who received their religious sacraments, as well as baptismal records. Also found personal folders and admission cards, which provide information about application and departure, correspondence and parental addresses and occupations.
