This subseries contains the chronicles of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of London in St. Thomas, Ontario. There are records on the various teaching ministries and other religious activities of the Sisters at St. Joseph’s Convent from 1894 to 1994, and documentation on the education and spiritual work of Sister Mary Boer at a Community Apartment on Wellington Street from 1994 to 1997. The chronicles also contain records on the founding of St. Joseph’s Convent on February 8, 1897, and its many renovations. The chronicles cover various musical, sporting, and social events the Sisters participated in at Holy Angel’s Elementary School and St. Joseph’s High School. This subseries also has records on Sister Mary Boere who taught at St. Raphael’s Separate School from 1975 to 1982, and at William Sherlock Morrison School from 1982 to 1996. On May 6, 1979, the Sisters celebrated a hundred years of service to St. Thomas. There are records that Holy Angels and St. Anne’s Parishes held a Centennial Celebration to honour the 178 Sisters who served in St. Thomas since 1879.

There are several lists of Sisters who ministered in St. Thomas, including identifying who taught and those who entered the Congregation. There is also a list of music students at St. Joseph’s Convent and a list of furniture expenses. There is a booklet History of the St. Thomas Parish 1803-1921 compiled by Monsignor Thomas West in 1921 with printed pictures of Fathers, churches, schools, communion class, cadets, and a regiment parade in St. Thomas and surrounding area. There is a 1979 guestbook for the Sisters’ hundredth anniversary in St. Thomas. There is a 1954 event brochure for St. Joseph’s School of Music graduation and recital at Holy Angels’ Church. There are valedictorian speeches by graduating students and sermons . There is correspondence, thank you cards, and personal letters regarding a lace veil made by the Sisters at Good Shepherd Convent in Limerick, Ireland, which was gifted on the hundredth birthday of Sister Doreen.

There are numerous news clippings related to the Sisters in St. Thomas, religious appointments, tributes, celebrations, St. Joseph’s High School, Joseph’s School of Music, Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church, the closing and demolition of St. Joseph’s Convent and St. Joseph’s High School, Reverend Robert Cartwright acceptance of a new mission in Perú. There are also obituaries and articles related to deaths of Mother M. Ignatia (Catherine Ann) Campbell, Father Marcel Leo LeBoeuf, and Donald Udell, a twenty-year-old RCAF pilot and graduate of Holy Angels School and St. Joseph’s High School, during the Second World War. In addition, there are photographs of Reverend Father William Flannery, St. Joseph’s Convent, Holy Angels’ School, and Our Lady of the Angels Church in St. Thomas, Ontario. There is also the vinyl record, God Bless the People of St. Joes, written by Dennis Scherer and J. Richard Hutt to commemorate the one hundred twenty-fifth anniversary of St. Joseph’s Hospital and Home in Guelph, Ontario.

This subseries contains the chronicles of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of London, Ontario during their summer vacations at St. Joseph’s-on-the-Lake in Kingsville, Ontario. There is a short history of St. Joseph’s-on-the-Lake assembled by Sister Dolorosa Sullivan with input provided by the daughter of the properties previous owners, Miriam Woodbridge. There is correspondence, newspaper articles, and brochures relating to the historical legacy of the property before it was owned by the Sisters, as well as the efforts of Troy and Anne Loop to transform the building into a commercial inn and spa after the Sisters sold the property. There is also a financial account book from 1954 to 1970.

There is a list of Sisters who planned on attending the closing celebration for St. Joseph’s-on-the-Lake, to be held at St. Joseph’s-on-the-Lake on October 17 and 18, 1998. There is a “Memory Book,” project dubbed the “Lakeside Memories,” which was organized by Sister Bernadette Boyde. Sisters who had vacationed at the lake house were given a page to write their favourite memory of St. Joseph’s-on-the-Lake. The written pages of memories were collected to be displayed at the closing day celebration of St. Joseph’s-on-the-Lake. There are recollections on rest, relaxation, peaceful days, swimming, sunbathing, beach picnics, swinging on the garden swing, motor trips, buying groceries from road stalls, playing bridge, cooking, and sharing meals. There are also brochures on the closing program of events, including the lyrics for 30 songs in a song sheet titled Old Time Favourites, and printed pictures of St. Joseph’s-on-the-Lake. In addition, there are photographs of the chapel and sunset, as well as photographic negatives related to the closing ceremonies at St. Joseph’s-on-the-Lake.

This subseries contains the chronicles of St. Joseph’s Convent of Haney (a neighbourhood within Maple Ridge) by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of London, Ontario during their western mission in British Columbia. The Sisters operated St. Patrick’s School in St. Patrick’s Parish, Haney, Maple Ridge from 1956 to 1985. This subseries contains historical summaries and drafts written by Sister Mary Esther from 1956 to 1985. Some topics include writing student report cards; Grade 7 Graduation; Teacher-Parent Days; facilitating Sport Days and athletic competitions such as Volleyball tournaments, Cross-country, and Track and Field; preparing students for theatre and musical concert performances, including a float and parade march in the Mountain Festival; the purchase of record players, tape recorders, and a Gestetner (office duplicating machine); and the conversion of an oil to a gas heating system. As well as she wrote about the voting of delegates for the General Chapter; Regional Council meetings; participating in Social Justice and Community Workshops, attending the Catholic Teacher’s Convention, retreats, celebrations, Christmas and Thanksgiving preparations, a weekly quilting bee, and organizing fundraisers such as the Annual Fall Fun Fair and Bazaar, a Wake-a-Thon event for Vietnamese refugees, and a Walk-a-Thon to raise funds to purchase a van to transport children competing in intramural sport events. She also wrote about picnic trips to Stanley Park, Vancouver; visits to other cities in British Columbia such as to Mission, New Westminster, Kelowna, the Okanagan Valley, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, and Harrison Hot Springs; and further trips afar to Banff, Alberta and to Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, United States of America. Sister Mary Esther also recorded personal incidents on eating wild meat, moose, deer, mountain goat, and Fraser River salmon, for the first time; mountain sketching; and daily activities and events at the convent such as the damp and frosty weather, the rare snowfall, spring cleaning, decoration, house painting, landscaping, gardening, fence building, chapel renovations, convent roof repair, a basement flood of 51-inches of water, and the havoc of Typhoon Freda on October 12, 1962.

This subseries also contains lists of Sisters who served in missions at Haney (Maple Ridge), Kelowna, Rutland, and Oliver, British Columbia from 1956-1985. There are correspondences from the Catholic School Board of the Archdiocese of Vancouver, hierarchical diagrams of the business organization and school subjects of the British Columbia Public School System, and newsletters from the Department of Education of Victoria, British Columbia that contain announcements, directives, rulings, examinations, and changes regarding the administration and curriculum. There are also two reports, one on the Minutes of Parish Council Meeting, from May 9, 1978, and St. Patrick’s Christian Community Annual Report, from February 1972. In addition, there is a commemorative magazine from September 1981 on the 25th Anniversary of St. Patrick’s School produced by St. Patrick’s School students in an enrichment class that contains student written poetry, short articles on their classes, interviews with teachers, reports on clubs and sport days, and printed pictures of sport activities, and school classroom photographs.

This subseries contains several historical summaries on the Belle River Mission of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of London, Ontario. This series includes a short history on the Belle River Parish from 1883 to 2000. There are the chronicles of St. Joseph’s Convent at Belle River from 1889 to 1974 that include a postcard of St. Jude and St. Simon Church; printed photographs and pictures of paintings of the Sisters in Le Puy, Lyons, and St. Didier, in France; and a St. Jean Baptiste School Graduation program brochure on June 21, 1956. This subseries contains a list of Sisters and Clergy stationed in Belle River from 1889 to 1983. The topics within the chronicles include the foundational history of the Parish of Belle River, the arrival of the Sisters to Belle River, renovations and building extensions to St. Joseph’s Convent and to St. Jude and St. Simon Church, influenza crisis, a fatalistic tornado, the Village of Belle River Council, the Roman Catholic Separate School Board, teachers’ strikes, school open houses, sport events, teacher-parent meetings, musical recitals, and graduation ceremonies. There are also chronicles also document the Sisters’ daily activities as well as religious retreats, conferences, travels, jubilees, and preparation for the centennial celebration. In addition, there is a typed draft of Loose Leafs’ of Belle River 1965 – Some Old, Some New, written by Sybil Little with a focus on the historical buildings during the founding and early history of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Belle River from 1868 to 1965. Also included in the draft are printed pictures of buildings, statues, and an aerial photograph of Belle River.

This subseries contains a chronicle of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of London, Ontario’s ministry in Edmonton, Alberta from 1922 to 1962. The lengthy chronicle is contained in a black textured vinyl binder included with a news clipping and a printed picture of Mother Ignatia Campbell (1840-1929). The chronicles document the overall general history of the Sisters in the western region and their more outstanding achievements of parish events and activities, which serve as landmarks for the recollection of the many other incidents attendant on parish life. The Sisters were working in various ministries, such as education, health care, social work, and enhancing spiritual growth. There are two chapters specifically on the chronicles of the Sisters in the Edmonton Diocese. One chapter is from 1922 to 1932, and the other one ranges from 1940 to 1962. There are other chapters on the foundation of the congregation, a novitiate diary written by Sister St. Paul from 1925 to 1935, the opening of missions at Galahad, north Edmonton, Wetaskiwin, Killam, and Rimbey in Alberta, as well as a list of contributed items for the opening of the Edmonton Regional House.
